Kristal Moffett -- Toxies 2012

I’m so excited to see the raising awareness around toxic chemicals. I have noticed more and more articles in newspapers and magazines. I am seeing more and more products promoting themselves chemical free, and I am beginning to hear more and more conversations questioning what manufacturers are putting in and around us.

Kristal Moffett -- A Cancer Schmancer Mother’s Day

My 9 year old son ran into my room last week and said he had to give me my Mother’s Day gift right then and there. He was holding something behind his back he was clearly proud of. He told me to close my eyes and put my hands out. I followed his instructions and felt him place a weighted object in my hands. When I opened my eyes I saw he had made me a cotton sleeping mask that he had filled with rice! We put a small drop of lavender oil on it and we took turns resting with it. It was so heavenly.

As I read the paper this morning and come across an article about Mad Cow Disease being confirmed in California it reminds me of many reasons I moved to a more plant based diet. Mad Cow was not the reason for my switch to vegetarianism, but it does remind me more about the condition so many animals are kept in that wind up on our dinner tables.

Kristal Moffett -- Throw Out Your Lead Based Lipsticks Ladies

In the past few weeks I don’t think any of us could miss all the press on lead in lipsticks! Yikes!

The amount of lead differs from brand to brand and from color to color. No amount of lead is considered to be safe in our systems. Small amounts of lead have been linked to health issues.

Kristal Moffett, Chemical Free Nights

Fran really got me thinking about formaldehyde when she ran the article about Johnson and Johnson’s Baby Shampoo. Shocking to hear that an ingredient in something you would put on your newborn infant would contain formaldehyde! Most people I know love the smell and would never associate it with a toxin.

BLOG: Kristal Moffett Science Helping To Light Our Way

A very interesting article was published in the Daily Mail, a newspaper in the UK.  The headline “Chemical found in deodorants, face cream and food products is discovered in tumors of ALL breast cancer patients.”  The chemical they are referring to are parabens.    The definition of a paraben is any group of compounds used as preservatives in pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and in the food industry.  According to an article in the New Scientist, parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen, which is known to play a role in the development of breast cancers.  This scientific evidence really just rein

BLOG: Plastic Free Lunches

Happy New Year! As we move into 2012 it seems there is more and more information coming out about toxins in our products and homes. I am so happy to see so many articles, websites and conversations getting started around this subject. I feel inspired to know that so many people want to be more informed about what they are using on themselves and in their homes and ultimately on our planet. I even see it in my children and their friends. I think it is so great for this next generation to be aware.

BLOG: Kristal Moffett Chemical Free Holiday Shopping

I decided on a few requirements for gift buying this year. The first is that all the gifts must be chemical free. The second is that the gift must be either beautiful or useful, and the third is that I am trying to buy as little as possible from giant stores. It has been easier than I thought. First on the list was my husband who loves great shaving creams. Trying to get him to hear the message on toxins has been interesting. I wouldn’t say I am there 100%, but anytime their is a holiday or chance to purchase him a non-toxic replacement I do it!

One of the simple ways I keep plastic out of my life and home is by using muslin produce bags and canvas totes at the market. I now have a collection of canvas totes from different events and markets, and I buy my reusable produce bags from Priscilla Woolworth. By not putting your fruits and veggies in plastic you are reducing the chemicals that can leach into them. I also started buying my rice, grains, and dried fruit from the bulk bin. It really saves on money and packaging. I use the muslin produce backs with my bulk buys as well.
