One of the simple ways I keep plastic out of my life and home is by using muslin produce bags and canvas totes at the market. I now have a collection of canvas totes from different events and markets, and I buy my reusable produce bags from Priscilla Woolworth. By not putting your fruits and veggies in plastic you are reducing the chemicals that can leach into them. I also started buying my rice, grains, and dried fruit from the bulk bin. It really saves on money and packaging. I use the muslin produce backs with my bulk buys as well. I am constantly noticing in the market how much packaging there is and how so much of it is plastic! I use (s/b used) to love to eat the organic rotisserie chickens at my market that they keep warm under those red lights. Then when I started to educate myself on plastic and the phthalates that are in plastic and their potential harmful effects.....I started to look at everything I bought with a different eye. All of a sudden those organic chickens that are in PLASTIC containers and are under heat lamps no longer looked so appetizing!! One step at a time. This week take a look at your food and it’s packaging. Keep it simple. Buy fresh and keep packaging to a minimum!
