Once again fashion brought out the who’s who of DC. On Wednesday night I was honored to attend MODUS Union 2011 presented by Labels for Love an organization founded by Mary Amons. You might know her as one of the cast members from Bravo’s reality TV show, “Real Housewives of DC,” but she should be best known for all her tremendous work and efforts in philanthropy. Labels for Love was founded in 2006 “to produce fashionable events to raise funds and awareness for the foundation’s chosen local and national women’s and children’s causes.”
The benefactor of this fabulous event was Fran Drescher’s Cancer Schmancer Movement. So of course, the guest of honor was Fran Drescher herself whom I was lucky to meet and talk with for a bit! What an amazing woman! Having gone through so much in her life she has an incredible ability to find ways to turn it to positive. As I am affected by the evils of cancer, this event touched me personally. The primary message of this movement is to focus and be vocal about cancers that affect women and how early detection can be the cure. Unfortunately, like my Mother, many women are diagnosed at stage 4, making it’s a race against the clock. Fran talked about her struggles with doctors and overcoming the disease and was inspirations to listen to.
The event was emceed by Boxer from 98.7 WMZQ and Kimberly Suiters from NBC Washington News4 and attendees included Rep. Dan Benishek and wife Judy and Rep. Austin Scott and his wife Vivien. Required attire was fashionable, and being in such a diverse city you could see styles from both ends of the spectrum. The event was held outside under the Historic Lumber Shed Plaza, a beautiful outdoor space on a not-so-beautiful evening. However, the wind, rain and brisk temperatures didn’t shy these fashion divas away from the step and repeat . I was in awe of all the sky-high Louboutins at one venue!
Guests enjoyed an open bar, passed hors d’oeuvres and a live band while they checked out vendor displays and waited on the main event – a 3D film and runway show by Mark Bouwer. Models walked the runway in stunning elegant evening dresses. Despite the weather the venue was perfect for an event such as this. The Yards Park is revitalizing its look and the space was right in front of the water which added to the atmosphere.
Please take the time out to check out Labels for Love and the Cancer Schmancer Movement. Everyone has been, is, or will be affected by cancer in their lifetime. It is very important that we make the time to prevent a late diagnosis. Life is worth living.
