For Fran Drescher, nothing is more important than prioritizing health. The 67-year-old actress (who will play Timothée Chalamet’s mother in the upcoming film Marty Supreme) has spent nearly 20 years lobbying for policy change and increased health education via her non-profit foundation, Cancer Schmancer.
For Drescher, her passion for early cancer detection came directly as a result of her frustrating struggle to receive her own diagnosis. “I was experiencing some subtle gynecologic symptoms—bleeding between periods, cramping after sex. Then I started to feel my breasts getting harder and hurt more,” she tells Prevention of her symptoms, which were dismissed by not one, not two, but eight doctors over the course of two years. “The collective agreement was that I was perimenopausal...but actually, I had uterine cancer.”
The result of her experience has been a long-term passion for making sure women can advocate for themselves with their doctors—and do it early. “The reason why we lose loved ones to cancer—in most cases—is because of late-stage diagnosis. People are not educated to recognize it and make a move quickly. So we started turning people’s heads around and saying we’re doing it all wrong.”
